Question 1: What is your gender?
Here it shows that the sample of our target audience surveyed was predominantly female but because of the way we advertised this, the gender of the consumer could not be chosen evenly. This could suggest that indie rock fans are mostly female or that indie rock fans who are active online are often female, this is something to keep in mind when producing the digipak making our lead singer stand out and be found interesting by a female audience especially.
Question 2: What is your age?
Here the surveys shows that the majority of indie fans are in the same age range of 16-18 which is the kind of range we are targeting in particular from prior research. This also tells us that the internet is obviously a good way to reach fans of this genre and age so we will most definitely be referencing some sort of online download on the advertisement poster (most likely the album download).
Question 3: Where do you think the band should first appear on the digipak?
Question 4: What attracts you to an indie music digipak?
This question allowed the consumer to pick as many answers as they wished. The most popular answer unsurprisingly was "attractive/interesting image photographed" we will definitely have to include some form of interesting and attractive photography to appeal to our target audience. "Vintage and retro features" was the next most popular answer, we will definitely incorporate some of these features to appeal to our audience such as cassette tapes/record players/ VCR's etc to give the retro quirky feel. The least clicked answer was "large text" this is evident in many style models we have analysed such as 'Kings of Leon Only by the Night' and 'The Yeah Yeah Yeahs It's a Blitz' the fonts are fairly small. This tells us that the artwork is more important to appeal to audiences of the genre indie rock.
Question 5: Where do you think is the best location to photograph an indie/rock band for their debut album?
Here the most poplar answer is stereotypically "a wood/forest" we will experiment with this demand when drafting designs whilst trying to keep the excitement and interest of the band at the same time. The next most popular answers are "a studio on a plain background" and "an urban location" the plain studio background idea would give us more room for creativity when editing the images after but the urban location may give an extra edginess to their appearance so we will experiment with both when designing mock ups in order to appeal to our target audience.
Question 6: Which is your favorite indie music album and why?
We received allot of variation with this question but an album that came up a few times was 'The XX Coexist' and the reasons given were things such as "the artwork is distinctively recognizable to the band" and "the use of colour is very artistic and attractive" Both these quotes from the target audience we will use to help build our ideas on.
Coexist cover |
Bellow are more examples given by the target audience and reasons why in the captions:
The Smiths- Louder than Bombs "the use of someone not in the band and the colour filter stands out"- we will experiment with colour filters in our digipak |
Yeah Yeah Yeahs- It's a Blitz "sheer simplicity but great interest"- we will keeps ours simple but interesting |
Alt J -An Awesome Wave "it's just really cool and the colours are interesting and it's just effortless"- ours will include interesting use of colour |
